Garages likely left open to ventilate, keep openers functioning

As it gets warmer, we tend to see people leaving their garage doors open about 12 inches. Does this really keep the house cooler? It seems like it would just let in more heat

There could be a couple of different reasons some people leave their garage doors slightly ajar.

Letting in some air to drain off some of the heat in the garage wouldn’t necessarily make the house itself hotter, but it could keep the garage cooler, especially if there were a breeze blowing from the right direction. And it’s possible some people might have some heat-sensitive junk stored in the garage or maybe something that doesn’t smell so great.

But probably the main reason: garage-door openers.

Hot air rises, right? It’s probably hot enough in your garage as it is, assuming it’s not air-conditioned. But up near the ceiling it’s a lot hotter. Many garage-door openers come equipped with a heat sensor that sort of pulls the plug on the opener when the mechanism gets too hot. That’s to prevent fires. So leaving your door up a few inches helps keep the garage a bit ventilated. Of course, you don’t want to leave it up high enough for a burglar to wiggle [more]

June is Garage Door Safety Month

The International Door Association and the Door & Access Systems Manufacturers Association have designated June as Garage Door Safety Month.

Garage door manufacturers, like First United Door Technologies,  and garage door dealers throughout the U.S. and other countries are working to increase awareness of the possible hazards of garage doors and automatic opener systems, and the need for periodic inspection and maintenance to keep them safe.

It’s important that the public is aware of garage door safety and that safety checks should be done to insure it’s in proper working order by using these ten garage door safety and security tips.

1. Make sure garage door opener control button is out of the reach of small children.

2. Do not let children play with garage door remote controls.

3. Consult the owner’s manual and learn how to use the garage door’s emergency release feature.

4. Visually inspect the garage door each month. Look at springs, cables, rollers and pulleys for signs of wear. Do not attempt to remove, adjust or repair these parts or anything attached to them. A trained door repairman must make adjustments to these parts, which are under high tension.

5. Test the garage door opener’s reversing mechanism monthly by placing a 2 x 4 board or a [more]

Friday Funnies: The Garage Door Opener of Days Gone Bye

Time for a Garage Door Opener

If you’re tired of jumping out of the car to heave your garage door open on those cold, rainy, snowy days, then it’s time to consider purchasing an automatic garage door opener. Or if your opener dates from before the 1990’s, then you should consider replacing it to ensure that your opener meets current safety and security standards. Consider the following factors when choosing your next garage door opener.

Power

Automatic garage door openers vary in power. The amount you need depends on the type of door you have. For most residential applications the ½ hp is more than adequate and it is the most common motor you will find. Some jobs such, as custom-made wood doors can weigh several hundred lbs more than usual and could require a ¾ hp motor.

Drive Type

The automatic opener pulls your garage door using one of three different types of drives. A chain drive can be used on all types of doors, and resembles the chain drive on a bicycle. They’re the most affordable, but can be noisy if not properly adjusted, and require lubrication and service every couple of years.

Belt drives are made of sturdy rubber, so they offer the quietest operation and the [more]

Garage Door Annoyance

Fun and annoying all in one: your garage door malfunctioning may not be your fault at all.  In fact, it might be the fault of the United States Navy!

Apparently the USS Abraham Lincoln, currently docked in Kitsap, is messing with people’s garage door openers because it’s on the same frequency.

Have fun with that!

Problem Solved: “The garage door won’t close all the way”

Often times when your Garage Door won’t close all the way, your first instinct is to call somebody to fix it. But there are a few things you can check to save yourself some time and money.

The first thing you will want to inspect is the limit switch. The Limit switch regulates how far open and closed the garage door opener moves the garage door. The limit switch can be adjusted with a screw driver.

Here’s some instructions on adjusting the limit switch and further explanations:

The garage door opener has two mechanisms that control the opening and closing of the garage door. One is the safety reverse mechanism that will stop the door operation in the event something obstructs the door. The opener also uses limit switches to determine how far to open and close the garage door.

When the garage door does not open all the way or does not seal to the floor when closed, you can reset the limit switches. Resetting the limit switches is not difficult and requires only one tool.

1. Place a step ladder under the garage door opener motor. Locate the limit switch screws on your unit. Most switches are on the back of the motor [more]
